What to expect when using a Midwife...
All over the world most babies are born safely into the hands of midwives.  And in the countries that have the very best maternity and birth care (Sweden, the Netherlands, and New Zealand) midwives are the main maternity care providers. Many studies show that births attended by midwives have lower infection rates, fewer interventions – including fewer c-sections, and healthier babies than physician-attended hospital births. The United States is one of the few developed countries that does not have midwives taking care of most of normal, healthy pregnant women.

Monitoring a pregnancy is pretty straight forward.  Whether you see a doctor or a midwife, blood is tested, blood pressure is monitored, and the baby’s heart rate and growth are charted.  If midwives and doctors do the same medical testing, how is midwifery care different?

Midwives are health care professionals who specialize in normal pregnancy and birth. Midwifery is based on the knowledge that our bodies are well-designed to grow a baby and give birth. Trained to support health, midwives are able to care for the whole of pregnancy.  For most of us pregnancy is so much more than medical events. Pregnancy changes our bodies, our relationships with our partner, our parents, and our other children.  Pregnancy changes our sense of self and our place in the world.

Midwives offer lots of...

Time
Time to ask questions. Time for hopes and dreams. Time for fears. Time to laugh. Time to ask more questions.

My prenatal appointments are scheduled for one hour so that you have the time you need. You are growing a baby. Your body and your relationships are changing. You don’t need to be rushed.

Support
One-on-one support:  while you are growing your baby, throughout your entire labor, while you learn to breastfeed, and in the first weeks of parenting.

“Hands-on” care has been shown to make pregnancy easier.  It’s easier to take care of yourself when you are pregnant if you have access to the information and education you need.  Labors are shorter and easier when you have the continuous support that a midwife can provide. Breastfeeding success is much more likely when you receive skilled help. You and your baby deserve the support, love, and attention that will get you off to the best start.

Respect
Respect for you as an individual. Respect for you as a family.

Every woman is different. Every family is different. You know best when it comes to making decisions for your pregnancy.  My job is to provide you with the information you need. Your job is to take care of yourself and your baby.  You know how to grow your baby; and because you grew your baby, you know how to give birth to your baby. Each woman, each pregnancy, each baby is different. I respect your uniqueness.
